“The Community House is the mortar that holds together the bricks of the community – the only organization in the area that reaches out to the full spectrum of people.”

The Community House
HISTORY
1941
COMMUNITY HOUSE INCORPORATED
A group of residents recognized a growing need to support + serve the community, therefore The Community House was established. Committed to the belief that the community should take care of its own as the nation entered World War II, they set in motion a series of extraordinary accomplishments that took the organization from its original location in downtown Hinsdale, through moves, renovations, & expansions, to our present facility.
The founders created a plan to acquire the facility & cover the first 2 years of operating funds for $30,000.
1956
CORNERSTONE LAID AT EIGHT & MADISON
This move was made possible by a second confluence of events.
Post WWII, the economy led to significant growth which helped with the relocation of The Community House. A beautiful 25-acre lot, co-owned by The Village of Hinsdale & School District 181, was purchased in a mutually beneficial trade agreement.

Since 1943 these activities have been the backbone of what we do, and help make The Community House a vital, beloved resource for all generations!
It is the synergy of our combined offerings and impact that makes us unique.
